Iteration 2: Initial Research

This image shows handwritten notes on an A5 piece of printer paper in green and black ink. The main statement is written in all caps, "how do Tomie and Liliko's narratives represent the societial violence perpetuated against young women?"

This was the second detailed planning process I went through in this project. I started with initial brainstorming to find connections between the two protagonists in my stories, and furthered these connections through research (those findings being written in black). Although some of these detailed ideas were later abandoned, I kept many general ideas such as the gendered power dynamic of violence and the representaiton of body horror as a destruction of the self. My main takeaway from this planning process was the research question written in all caps, which I later explored in more detail. My unconvential choice of medium came about becuase I was in a space where I lacked my traditional materials, so I had to work with what I could find. Sometimes we gain inspiration for our projects in "inconvenient" spaces, and we have to find ways to record this inspiration despite the roadblocks.
