Social Media as an Outlet

"I'm not outspoken. I am not confrontational. But I have a lot to say."

As the internet becomes more accessible, social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook have been more frequently used as an outlet for creative and emotional expression. For many, social media is an open line of communication and offers an opportunity to get support, feedback, or validation without forcing unwanted conversation.

As a child, Janet Martinez recalls being fascinated by nursery rhymes, and the way rhythm and music would create something memorable. As she grew older, she began to compose her own lyrics and rhymes into composition books. Soon enough, Janet discovered her love for poetry.

"I never had the opportunity to share anything that I wrote."

Social media gives users the ability to remain anonymous or private. Many people, like Janet, take advantage of this opportunity and use separate accounts or "finsta" to express themselves without the fear of being judged or labeled. A "finsta" is an Instagram account that is not likely to show typical content from a personal account.

"I knew I wouldn't ever become famous for writing, but I love to write. It helps me release, reflect, and reconnect."

Since 2016, her "finsta" poetry account has been updated with pictures of family, adventures, daily affirmations, and her poetry. Janet's everyday writing is inspired by her everyday life. She writes about healthy and unhealthy relationships, hardships, the struggle of identity and motherhood, and LatinX culture.

Everyday writing through social media has the ability to create communities and offer safe spaces for emotional and creative expression. It's nearly impossible to go onto a social media platform like Instagram without seeing bloggers, influencers, and everyday uses like Janet post their content.
