"American Scenery"
Dublin Core
Title
Description
This artifact is a stereoscopic card featuring a view of Arlington House, where Confederate general Robert E. Lee once lived. Stereoscopic cards were popular from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth century. The back of this card is not divided for an address and message; in fact, the back evidences the kinds of jottings done in everyday life--e.g., sums ("22+25=47") and words in cursive ("Indian Indian Indian"). Although the photographs on the front of the card are situated side by side, leading one to view it horizontally, much of the writing on the back was done while the card was turned vertically.
