Labels: Keeping the World Organized

IMG_5279.JPG

We all use different organizational tools every day. A very common one is the use of labels. These help us identify what something is, who it belongs to, or where something is meant to go quickly. Since they are often used for personal organization, it is important that we address how they fit within the museum and the categories we have.

Labels can be used in many different organizational ways, and I will explore two in this exhibit. The first is how they are used to explain content quickly. The second is how we use them to denote ownership over certain items. These are the two most common uses that I have found, and they help in differentiating labels from other artifact types.

That being said, I have run into a few examples that may not fit neatly into one category. Labels are currently grouped in with signs in our museum, and there can be overlap between the two at times. I will use some of these grey area artifacts to help explain important differences between labels and signs, and labels and other kinds of artifacts.
