Dessert: Mantecaditos

This Puerto Rican mantecaditos (small sugar cookies) recipe features handwritten modifications. Every holiday season, my mother makes mantecaditos for her co-workers and, every year, is asked for the recipe.

She always cuts the ingredients by half (the recipe makes 150 cookies) because she doesn't want anything to go to waste, and she never makes enough. This cookie recipe is delicious because it is mildly sweet with a hint of salt. Despite only adding a small amount of coarse salt, the flavor finds its way into the batter and hits the palette mid-bite. To top it off, my mother cuts small guava squares and places one on top of each cookie.
