Diverse Identity through Poetry

"As a mother, writing and poetry have me more aware of my feelings. I was more aware that I need personal and professional growth. I was more aware that I needed to give myself my own identity. I was more aware of what I needed, who I am, and what I want. I got used to being labeled as a wife and a mom that I couldn't find a way to detach from it. Writing gives me an identity outside of all that."

Janet became a mother at 19 years old and since then her main priority has always been providing security for her family. Everyday writing continues to give her an identity outside of motherhood. It allows her the freedom to be herself.

“My poetry reflects me, as a woman, as a mom, as a wife”

Everyday writing shows audiences the multiple intersections between identity, culture, and gender. Those intersections offer a closer look at the multiple identities that Janet has as a woman, mother, and Latina.

"I am Latina"

Janet shows pride and honor in her background and ethnicity in her work. Si Soy Latina is one of my favorites by her and I feel so strongly connected because were living in a time in which, we feel forced to hide our roots and diversity.

"There have been so many times where I am stuck in between. Either I'm too Latina or I am not Latina enough"

Janet uses her unique voice and language to acknowledge her true identity. Being Latina is significant to how she was raised and the woman she is today and it reflects in her poetry.
