Description

This screenshot shows a small section of clees’ guide for the fight, The Unending Coil of Bahamut (Ultimate), containing both a text explanation and a diagram. The full guide can be found here (warning, long): https://clees.me/guides/ucob/ .

The diagram shows only one possible instance of the occurrence, but the text above it elaborates on the ways that the pattern may vary somewhat. The mechanic is discussed in great detail as the fight itself is very complicated, and the target audience of this guide is players who are already very familiar with and skilled in the game.

The text also showcases some of the ways in which Final Fantasy XIV players who raid will refer to specific things in the game—note “Starting true north (12 o’clock) of the arena…” this short phrase shows two different common terms for the north of the arena. The reason that “true north” is specified instead of just “north” is because it is common for many players to take a “boss-relative” (or in some cases, obstacle-relative) approach to directions during fights, in which “north” is shorthand for “whatever way the boss is facing” (it can be pretty confusing at first, but ultimately makes fights easier to understand for the people participating). This particular mechanic cannot be resolved with a relative position because of how certain things spawn.
