Doodling as a Writing Practice

In our everyday writing, we often find that a moment's distraction has left a physical impression upon our papers. Whether you were bored during a lecture, or perhaps you spaced out during an assignment, doodles are a shared habit among writers. Innocuous, they show up in empty corners, or in the margins of your notes. At first glance these may seem like mindless drawings, but upon further examination we begin to understand the effect doodles have on writing. Doodles can provide a moment of passive information gathering and processing, the informality of the occasion can allow for a less-structured creative outlet, and the images drawn can provoke an entire new meaning to the piece. In doodling, artistic flairs can appear in the most highbrowed of papers. Just like any piece of writing, doodles are unique and must be analyzed alongside the adjacent writing material. In the following exhibit, I've included notes, schedules, lists, and journal entries to evaluate the different ways in which doodles have influenced my writing practices.
