Conclusion

Everyday writing is usually disregarded at the time of composition but analysis reveals these letters convey more than the words on the page. Even though Wayne Coloney doesn’t say he is strangely unaffected by violence and has a deep hatred for Nazis, it is clear after investigation. John would never tell Betty that he is so fed up with the war and the Navy that he is almost broken. More importantly, the thoughts and feelings presented in these letters where shared by thousands of other soldiers around the globe. Many of whom had these emotions but did not exactly know it at the time. Looking at the writing, the content of the writing is less important than the emotion behind it. In fact, it would be more useful to know what the author didn’t say instead of what he did.  In the moment, we must realize that everyday writing is reflective of trends in societal thinking and these trends are not evident in the content but rather the composition of the pieces.
